Many of the walking holidays we offer are based around the idea that the holidays are about what you can see on en-route rather than an endurance challenge that will require months of training to meet the required fitness level to do the tour.
We realise that people have different levels of fitness and previous walking holiday experience, so we have created a difficulty scale for you to follow. Please read the below difficulty scale before booking your next walking holiday with us and contact us if you have any questions.
All walking holidays have local support, detailed route notes and are designed to be rewarding holidays and we recommend using this difficulty scale as a guide only. Please note that local conditions are likely to be different to those found in the UK so please factor this into your decision too.
Easy hiking/walking with minor height differences. Walking times of up to 5 hours per day and about 15 to 20 km per day. Good level of fitness is required though routes are well sign-posted and close to public transport where possible.

At this level you can expect moderate walks on well-maintained walking paths without the need for any technical requirements. Daily walks with walking times of up to 5 hours (sometimes a little bit longer depending on your pace) with slight alterations in altitude.
You ideally will have experience of mountain walking or completed some long distance walks. The change in altitude and/or distances increases somewhat with tours of this category. Additionally you mainly walk on walking trails which require surefootedness and in some sections a head for heights.
Expect daily walking times from 4 up to 6.5 hours, including small summit ascents. Hence a good fitness level is necessary in order to enjoy the high altitude paths.
Depending on each individual tour you will walk on Alpine mountain paths, rocky and from time to time exposed trails on an altitude ranging from 1500m to 2500m.
Surefootedness, a head for hights and a good fitness level are essential requirements for tours of up to 7 hours daily walking time. Trekking experience is prerequisite for self-guided individual tours.
Good quality equipment is vital, since in parts there is no luggage transfer with overnight stays in chalets or cabins, so backpacks need to be carried by each individual.
