The new extensive hiking path ‚Salzalpensteig’ takes you along old former paths, on which salt was transported, commencing from the pretty banks of Lake Chiemsee, the ‚Bavarian Sea’, all the way to Lake Königssee, the ‚Bavarian Fjord’.

Walk along idyllic forest and rural tracks through a quaint but also charming landscape with small villages, characteristic farm houses and cow pastures.

Not only popular holiday destinations such as Reit im Winkl, best-known as the sunniest mountain village in Germany, the famous biathlon village of Ruhpolding and the historic salt/saline village Bad Reichenhall await on your hiking week

Day-by-Day Walking Holiday Itinerary


Day 1: Individual journey to Lake Chiemsee

Day 2: Prien/Environs – Marquartstein

The tour starts with a comfortable walk along the incredibly picturesque lakeside of Lake Chiemsee, through tranquil nature reserves near the reed belt.

You encounter a charming landscape with little forest paths and typical Bavarian farm houses dotted around on your route to Marquartstein.

Details: approx. 5 to 6 hours | 21 km | Up 480 m / Down 470 m.

Day 3: Marquartstein – Reit im Winkl

Today prepare for an idyllic alpine pasture tour. After the ascent to the green-blue mountain lake Taubensee, there are numerous alps inviting you for a break.

The route continues past grazing cattle and with views onto Lake Chiemsee from high above, then along a gorge trail into the well-known holiday resort Reit im Winkl.

Details: approx. 5,5 to 6 hours | 18 km | Up 870 m / Down 730 m.

Day 4: Reit im Winkl – Ruhpolding

A short hike across the alpine pasture and then descend into an enchanting area with crystal clear lakes surrounded by steep mountains.

A little later you get a view onto Rauschberg mountain, before you walk past the Biathlon Arena, where you can watch the roller ski training in summer. Onwards through shady pine forests until you reach Ruhpolding, amidst the Chiemgauer Alps.

Details: approx. 4 to 5,5 hours | 18 km | Up 280 m / Down 290 m.

Day 5: Ruhpolding – Inzell

Along the river Ache to Lake Taubensee and from there a cable car ascent onto the Rauschberg with magnificent panoramic views.

The descent leads via alpine pastures and past steep rockfaces, before you walk on forest and rural trails all the way to the climatic health resort Inzell. The typical Bavarian flair and the views onto the surrounding summits are best enjoyed with a cool ‚Maß’(1 litre) of beer in your hand.

Details: approx. 4 to 5,5 hours | 18 km | Up 110 m / Down 990 m.

Day 6: Inzell – Bad Reichenhall

Walk along the path of the brine pipelines and through the fascinating Weissbach ravine. The Salt Path leads you above the cute little mountain lake Thumsee, along forest paths with a view onto Bad Reichenhall. Past the Old Saltworks you reach this beautiful salt health resort, where the Rupertus-Thermal spa invites your muscles to some relaxation time.

Details: approx. 5 to 5,5 hours | 19 km | Up 220 m / Down 440 m.

Day 7: Bad Reichenhall – Lake Königssee

Short bus ride and then ascent to a glorious and remote forest area. High-altitude paths with incredible panoramic views lead you along the mountainside with the ‚Steinerne Meer’ mountain range and the two summits Watzmann and Hochkönig in front of you.

Then a short section along the brine pipeline path, before you ascend through the forest to the Grünstein mountain. Glistening deep down below you is lake Königssee, green in colour, with boat houses and little boats, set amidst the national park Berchtesgaden and is the picturesque finish of your hiking holiday.

Travel Information

We recommend flying to Munich or Memmingen and arriving by train to the starting point in Fussen. The region is covered by the DB ‘Bayern’ Ticket and is valid from the airport and all local public transport in Bavaria. For more information, please visit Deutsche Bahn.

By train to Füssen and then to the starting hotel by foot in a couple minutes, or by taxi.

Parking: Limited number of free parking at hotel. No reservation possible. Public parking garage for €7 per day. No reservation possible.

Return: Bus drive from Nauders to Landeck, duration about 1 hour. From Landeck to

Füssen by train, duration about 5 hours (2 x change of trains).

Organized return transfer to Füssen from Nauders EUR 85 per person, (possible just sunday) reservation requested, payable in advance.
