Tour Introduction

Located at the southern tip of mainland South America, shared by Chile and Argentina, the rugged territory of Patagonia is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and particularly for the incredible Torres del Paine; this is the setting for this superb trekking holiday.

Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park, is a wonderland of pink granite towers, iridescent blue lakes and surreally sculpted glaciers and it offers one of the world’s great trekking challenges, the 130 kilometre circuit of the Torres del Paine Massif.

Involving 6 days of hiking, by way of several lakeside camps and the remote John Garner Pass, this is the ultimate Patagonia trekking holiday: enhanced by excursions on foot to the most spectacular viewpoints in the Ascencio and Frances valleys.

Our Patagonia holiday now includes a day’s hike along the northern edge of Lake Nordenskjold, which effectively completes the whole circuit of the Torres del Paine. A support team means you are free to devote your energies to enjoying what has been voted the most dramatic mountain region on the planet!

Day-by-Day Walking Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in El Calafate

Rendezvous at group hotel in El Calafate. Single timed airport transfer provided. Remainder of the day is free to rest and relax. Services begin with overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Cerro Castillo

We catch a local bus to the Argentina/Chile border at Cerro Castillo. Here we take private transport for the drive to the Torres del Paine National Park. Overnight at Torres Ecocamp.

Day 3: Lago Dickson

Setting out from the Ecocamp, we have a long day of trekking to Lago Dickson. The trek follows the eastern bank of the Rio Paine. Overnight camping at Lago Dickson.

Day 4: Laguna Los Perros.

This is the wildest and least accessible section of the trek, following the Los Perros River. We see forest of southern beech and many water courses en route to the camp at lovely Laguna Los Perros.

Day 5: John Garner Pass

A tougher day today as we cross the John Garner Pass at 1200 metres. We descend to the shores of Lago Grey where we can view the impressive glacier and icebergs. Overnight at Camp Grey.

Day 6: Lago Pehoe

With the Cerro Paine Grande in view we trek to a refuge on the shores of Lago Pehoe. We camp here but can enjoy the refuge’s facilities which include a bar and showers.

Day 7: Cuernos del Paine

We hike into the Frances Valley, looking for the best views of the Cuernos del Paine. Then, descend to Camp Italiano and hike east to Camp Cuernos beside Lake Nordenskjold.

Day 8: Las Torres Ecocamp

To complete the circuit on foot, we hike eastwards for around 5 hours on a good, scenic trail on the north side of lake Nordenskjold. Overnight at the Las Torres Ecocamp.

Day 9: Ascencio Valley

Today we make the return trek to the head of the Ascencio Valley, to take in the classic view of the Paine towers which are also reflected in the lake below. Overnight at Torres Ecocamp.

Day 10: El Calafate

Leaving the Torres del Paine region we re-cross into Argentina today, at Cerro Castillo and then drive to El Calafate, where we check in to the group hotel.

Day 11: Departure

Services end after breakfast.

Is this holiday for you?

During the course of this relatively short adventure holiday in Patagonia, we cover a total distance just over 130 kilometres (including the 2 side trips that we make into the Frances and Ascencio valleys).

This equates with an average daily trekking distance of 19 kilometres. There are a couple of long walking days. Having arranged porter support, group members will not need to carry more than a normal day-pack at any stage of the trip.

The circuit trek around the Torres del Paine Massif is well-established and there are good trails for most of the route. However, on the north side of the range and especially whilst crossing the John Garner Pass, there are some sections of rugged pathway, negotiating slippery forested terrain and marshland. Altitude is not a factor on this holiday.
