Day-by-Day Walking Holiday Itinerary

1st Day: Individual journey to São Miguel/Furnas

2nd Day: Round trip Faial da Terra/Sanguinho

Today you explore Faial da Terra in the Southeast of the island. On your way you visit Sanguinho, a traditional village, which is uninhabited since 1970. Exotic and abundant vegetation from five continents is accompanying you.

During your walking tour you stop at waterfall “Salto do Prego”, where you can also take a bath.

3rd Day: Round trip Furnas & Terra Nostra

On your tour along the lake you experience how inhabitants use the high ground temperatures to cook traditional meals.

Look forward to the botanical garden Terra Nostra, with its romantic lakes, winding paths, exotic flowers, ancient trees and thermal water pool. Finally you explore the most important fumarole field of the Azores, taste the mineral water and visit the tea plantation.

4th Day: Rest day or day tour Nordeste

Today you have the option of either enjoying a day of rest or undertake a trip to the north-east. Characteristic for the north-east of the island are high mountains, rivers running through valleys, peninsula, charming viewpoints and white houses dotted around in green pastures. Next stop is at Ponta do Sossego lookout and Pico Longo.

Arrive in Povoação. In this village, situated in the most South Eastern part of the island, the first Portuguese navigators settled. Povoação Village offers a good example of Azorean urban style of 19th and 20th century. It is surrounded by 7 hills that afford excellent views.

The tour continues and stops at Ribeira Quente, a typical fishing village with a curving stretch of sand that forms the tranquil and solitary Fogo Beach. Along the road to this village there are torrential ferrous waterfalls and luxuriant vegetation. In the afternoon to Ponta Delgada, where you spend the next four nights.

5th Day: Round trip Lagoa do Fogo

This walking tour leads you to the south of the island. You discover one part of the trail along “Levada”-tracks, where you explore diversified flora.

At the highest point of the tour you reach the Fogo Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes of the Azores at 575 m above sea level. The lake is surrounded by indescribable beautiful landscape and is located at the foot of volcano Água de Pau.

Details: approx. 4,5 hours | 13 km | Up 440 m / Down 280 m.

6th Day: Round trip Sete Cidades

During this walk you explore the western part of the island with its full beauty and history. You start at the “Vista do Rei” lookout and end your tour at the Lake of Sete Cidades.

Enjoy the fantastic panorama view onto the northern and western coast of the island, as well as the numerous exotic flowers. On your return journey you stop at lookout “Santiage Lake”.

7th Day: Day of Rest or Whale Watching Trip

At the end of your week of walking you have the chance to experience a very special highlight! The crystal clear coastal waters of the Azores offer a unique habitat for numerous whale and dolphin species.

With a bit of luck you get to observe these protected marine creatures. Alternatively, you can choose a day of relaxation at the sea and contemplate this memorable walking tour.

8th Day: Individual departure or extra days

About the hotels

You are accommodated in two different villages during your holiday: at the beginning you stay for three overnights in Furnas, and afterwards you stay four overnights in the capital city Ponta Delgada.

Category A

Furnas/4**** Terra Nostra: the village is located in-between the same-named caldera and accommodates the well-known, hot brimstone springs, as well as mineral- and thermal springs which produce cold and hot water.

Adapted from the wonderful Terra Nostra Park, the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is one of the oldest hotels on the island. The charming, newly renovated house is imbedded into the quiet village and the wonderful nature of the caldera.

Ponta Delgada/4**** Marina Atlantico: this modern hotel is situated directly at the sea, at the marina of the island’s capital. Enjoy a magnificent view onto the sea from the spacious and comfortably furnished rooms. In the restaurant you are treated to delicious local delicacies. The indoor pool is the perfect place to relax tired muscles. Ponta Delgada is an ideal starting point to explore the island.

Category B

Furnas/Vista do Vale: simple and comfortable country style hotel in a nice panoramic scenery with view over the green town of Furnas. The hotel has a small garden, an outdoor pool for relaxation after the hikes. The rooms in the family-run hotel are decorated with wooden furniture and a balcony with view over the surrounding landscape. The hotels‘ own restaurant serves regional dishes.

Ponta Delgada/4****Do Colégio: The elegant renovated hotel is situated in the capital of the island in a former school building from the 19th century. The rooms are elegant and comfortably decorated, the hotel has an excellent restaurant and a swimming area and sauna to relax during your stay. Ponta Delgada is an excellent town to explore the island.
